Roman Ruin by Blackbird
published in Volume 1, Issue 4 on September 15th, 1994

Last night, we were so very quiet.
No killer stalked our apartment,
no spy had placed bugs in the walls,
  no bombers flew overhead

And yet,

As if for fear our voices might bring danger,
we were quiet as church mice.

  That's okay. Silence doesn't bother me--particularly from
  someone I trust.

But still--the hours we spent not talking now seem to me like
pools of water on the low wall of a Roman ruin, evaporating in
the hot Aegean sun.
