"Why Do We Miss People?" by Ace Boggess
published in Volume 10, Issue 3 on December 31st, 2003

[question from Andrea Fekete]

rap-bass bulging from a Mustang's speakers
reminds us of heartbeats
coffee we drink not fresh-brewed
was poured into another mug
years that feel like days ago
nearby romantics share a familiar phrase
"you touched me where I had not been touched by anyone"
ants crawling cafe's floor followed us
through cities
turn of a century
hundreds of hand-drawn footprints on the walk
the radio recalls the radio
bricks recall bricks
hanging plastic ivy recalls an image of the same
the past in league with one
whose name loiters in the throat
without advancing on the tongue
