Lencioni vs. Hwy 15 by Joe Lencioni
published in Volume 11, Issue 1 on June 28th, 2004

Driving
can't be good
when I'm so tired that
the trees and shrubs
cease to stop

[standing gaunt beside the highway and throwing their shadows at my car]

and begin to keep
pace with me.
And miles of time
rush through my eyes
between each blink,
suffocating the road's
rolling and unbroken
blue-gray sandpaper call.
And my face is numb
and probably red

because
the bright signs
on the side of the road
keep on hitting me
like a flashing alarm clock.
