Upgrading Their Diction by Peter Horn
published in Volume 3, Issue 3 on July 8th, 1996

There was a time when they talked
about beef, the missing taste of meat
in their pap

there was a time
when their jokes were lean
and subversive
and full of curses

there was a time
when the price of bread
and the cost of mielie
was the cause of derisive laughter

now they speak with a gravy tongue
with well-rounded fat vowels
like teachers of the nation
about economic laws
which forbid the just distribution
of beefsteaks and hamburgers
