Lying on the tarpapered roof at night
my fingers twirling in your black curls
you pointed to stars and said that Scorpio
and Aquarius were either wonderful or
doomed together and you couldn't remember
which. We should look it up, you said, and I
looked down at the two of us on our backs
in our army shorts, shuddering, hopeful
then looked up at the lights beyond your long fingers
and wished to never find out.
Watching you fall asleep up there, your
eyes dimming like flashlights in swampwater,
the March air tightening my breath
I didn't guess how doomed we were
or that the stars would have bothered
with our bitter little time.
