Attempt #42 by Don Lorr
published in Volume 7, Issue 2 on July 25th, 2000

We laugh, half-speaking
words--as we drift into shallow sleep--
words that would not make sense
to anyone at any other time

It's laughter, a connection
to the absurd which tugs at us
two tethered boats, bound

An arm thrown back over my head
clings to your ear
and your curved leg cleaves
to the pocket of my knee

we drift, jostled by words
half-spoken
towards and away, towards and away
our laughter
