Who's in Charge by Janan Platt
published in Volume 9, Issue 1 on March 1st, 2002

Nights in August, warmth is a bad thing
that makes people go outdoors
at all hours. The couple in bed

with their swamp cooler on high
wakes at one am, sweaty
So they take a walk along the road

hand in hand, no one seeing them
do this. It is a posture of submission
Parents swim naked

in their pools at midnight
At the mountain concert, adults
Hula-Hoop and twirl glow sticks

while barefoot children sleep
on blankets. Someone tells
how more stars fall in August

and as I listen one star
falls down, down, down, a great
white streak that makes me gasp
