Crossing (Joshua) by Matt Mason
published in Volume 9, Issue 1 on March 1st, 2002And the Jordan is wider
and wilder than an LA freeway, but God
finally gets everyone across it,
walking them through as the water parts
like the stories about back in Egypt;
and the rocks in the middle of the channel drip
trickles of river, and the fish
choke on a perfect universe
that's changed its mind.
And then, of course, through Jericho.
And Ai and Jerusalem and Hebron and Lachish and Eglon,
Makkedah, Libnah, Gezer, Debir, and on
and on across that bucking flow.
But they finally get across it.
And the rocks of that fat channel drip
with blood and children spilling
in a universe whose atmosphere was once
fat and sweet and filling.
